Cree Summer (born Cree Summer Francks on July 7, 1969) is an Afro-Canadian actress, voice-over actress, and musician. She is the primary voice of Susie Carmichael in most episodes of Rugrats, however, the role is also voiced in certain episodes by E.G. Daily, the voice actress of Tommy Pickles. She was born in Los Angeles, California, but grew up on the Red Pheasant Reserve in Saskatchewan. After her family was kicked off the reservation in 1975, Cree and her family lived on a bus, a horse stable, a commune, and with friends before moving to Toronto.

Cree's voice-over career started in 1983 when she portrayed the voice of Penny on the animated series, "Inspector Gadget." During the mid-80's, Cree did voice-over work on cartoons such as "Care Bears," "Ewoks," "Garbage Pail Kids," "Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters," and "Sylvanian Families." She also starred in television shows and made-for-tv movies.

From 1988 to 1993, Cree starred as Winifred "Freddie" Brooks on the NBC series, "A Different World." She is also known for portraying the voices of Elmyra Duff on "Tiny Toon Adventures," Dulcy on "Sonic The Hedgehog," Chloe on "Sabrina: The Animated Series," Tessa and Vanessa James on "Pepper Ann," Cleo on "Clifford the Big Red Dog," Miranda Killgallen on "As Told By Ginger," and Foxxy Love on "Drawn Together." She was also the voice of Kida in Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Music Career[]

Cree started singing at the age of 13. In 1985, she recorded the theme song for OWL/TV on the CBC Network. Cree provided background vocals on two tracks for her "A Different World" co-star, Jasmine Guy's 1990 solo album.

From 1991 to 1993, Cree was the lead singer of her band, Subject to Change. They were signed to Capitol Records and recorded their debut album, "Womb Amnesia" which got limited commercial release.

In 1999, Cree released her first solo album, "Street Faërie" on Work Records. The album was produced by Lenny Kravitz and she even toured with him as his opening act. She has also sung on the animated shows that she's done voice-over work in. She sung the theme song to "As Told By Ginger", but was later replaced by R&B artist Macy Gray. She also sang the opening theme song to the Rugrats spinoff All Grown Up!.

Personal Life[]

Cree is the daughter of Canadian actor/musician Don Francks and Afro-Canadian actress/dancer, Lili Red Eagle Francks. She has a younger brother, Rainbow Sun Francks (born on December 3, 1979) who is also an actor and a former VJ at MuchMusic. She is also childhood friends with Tara Strong.
