Summary[]

Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, and Dil are all in the living room, listening to old music on Grandpa Lou's radio while he sleeps nearby. The babies all love the music and describe how they like to dance and sing along to the music. Chuckie tells the group that he likes to imagine a whole story to go along with the lyrics, and the babies all agree that they like doing the same. They wonder if Dil imagines a story when he hears music. Chuckie doesn't think so; he thinks Dil is too young to know what to do with a crayon, let alone music.

The song on the radio then changes to "Daisy Bell" (or "Bicycle Built For Two"). Lil declares that this song is her favorite, but Phil argues that it is his favorite. The twins continue to argue, but decide to sing the song for Dil, so he can imagine a story for it. Instead of the actual song, however, the twins sing "Tricycle Not For You," and a music video plays throughout. Phil and Lil argue over who will get their newest toy: a tricycle with two seats. They briefly consider sharing it, but ultimately decide to let their mother split the trike apart and make two trikes out of spare parts.

After the song, Lou wakes up and takes the radio away. Lil is upset about this, but Tommy tells her that Dil was not paying attention to the twins' song anyway. Chuckie feels that Dil should hear a song about something he is familiar with, then pulls out a birthday card. He tells the babies that he got it from his father on his 2nd birthday, and it plays his and Chas' favorite song. He opens the card, and the song "Pack Up Your Troubles" plays. Chuckie explains what the song means to the group, and to keep Dil from chewing on the card, he decides to sing the song instead. Another music video starts with Chuckie tidying up his room. He sings the old war tune while various scary things attack him, like Mr. Friend, dust bunnies, and Aunt Miriam. He puts all the scary things into a bag and carries it outside to a waiting garbage truck. Chuckie, along with Chas, throw their bags full of troubles into the truck, and it drives away.

Before Chuckie can get to the big finish of his song, Angelica interrupts, demanding to know why Chuckie is "yelling." The babies explain that they are trying to teach Dil about music. Angelica says that they need to teach Dil a song about something he likes, like sweets or toys. Angelica then sings her rendition of "Toyland." She imagines herself as the princess of Toyland (dressed as a toy soldier), bossing the other kids around and taking their toys. She finishes her song, and Tommy asks Dil what he thought of it. Dil seems to think about it for a moment, then throws his rattle at Angelica's head. Angelica says the others shouldn't expect a gassy, drooly baby to know about music.

Tommy defends Dil, saying that he probably did not like the previous songs because they were not about him. Tommy gets a music box down from the cabinet and opens it. "You Make Me Love You" plays, and Tommy imagines himself as a lounge singer, with his friends as The Rugettes. He sings about how much he loves his younger brother, despite Dil being annoying and messy. Dil seems to like the song, but it bored Angelica to nearly falling asleep. Dil starts straining and grunting, and the babies think he is imagining something. But they are proven wrong when a foul smell comes from Dil. Angelica calls for Didi, who takes Dil upstairs for a diaper change. Angelica mocks the babies for their efforts to teach Dil how to appreciate music, and the babies give up.

Didi finishes changing Dil and sits with him in her rocking chair. She sings "Beautiful Dreamer," and Dil starts to fall asleep. As his eyes close, swirling colors form in his mind, and resolve into an image of Tommy.

Trivia[]

  • Phil and Lil's song is an altered version of the song 'Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)', popularized in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • This is the first musical episode in the series.
  • At the end of the episode, one can realize that Dil really loves Tommy, because he dreams of him (Tommy) as he falls asleep.
  • Not counting Chas, Betty, Howard, and Miriam's cameo appearances, Lou is the only character to not sing a song in this episode.
  • The end credits music is a version of "Beautiful Dreamer" played on the piano with only one finger.
  • In a promotion for the film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the title character appeared in the lower-right-hand corner during a rerun of this episode and, using one of his inventions, changed Chuckie's, Phil's, Lil's, and Dil's hair into his, accidentally turning into Carl when he tries to change Angelica's hair into his with a gun.[1]
  • Moral: Music can be about anything.
